In doing so this book takes stories rooted, for the most part, in New Jersey’s folklore, and places them within a historical narrative grounded on facts. Distant from the state’s famous Revolutionary War battlefields, along both New Jersey’s Atlantic Ocean and Delaware River and Bay coasts, a distinctive type of conflict was playing out. The combatants were privateers, militia troops, partisans, and illicit traders motivated not only by divergent political loyalties, but also by a quest for profit, spoils, and retribution. The mayhem thus created was a constant concern for the leaders on both sides, and a source of daily terror for coastal inhabitants.
